Cristian Romero to Inter Milan? Tottenham Transfer Latest

Cristian Romero could be on his way out of Tottenham Hotspur this summer after Inter Milan opened formal talks over a move for the Argentina defender. Romero's representatives have travelled to Italy for discussions, and the Serie A side are now working on an agreement with both the player and the club.

Inter sporting director Piero Ausilio has made little secret of the club's interest. "It's definitely a deal we are trying to sign with the player and the club," he said. "These things take some time, but there's definitely interest." For a defender who captained Spurs and won the World Cup with Argentina, that is a significant statement of intent.

Why Spurs may let him go

Tottenham have spent the summer reshaping their defence. Jan Paul van Hecke arrived for a reported £52million from Brighton, and Marcos Senesi joined on a free transfer, giving head coach Roberto De Zerbi fresh options at the back. With cover secured, the club appear willing to listen to offers for their captain rather than stand in his way.

Romero carries a market value of around €50million, a fee that Inter would ideally like to trim. That gap between valuation and budget is the sort of detail that can slow a deal, even when player, buyer and seller are all broadly willing.

He is not short of suitors

Inter are not alone in admiring the centre-back. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid and Real Madrid have all been credited with interest at various points, which strengthens Tottenham's hand if a bidding contest develops. For now, though, it is Inter who have moved first and moved fastest.

A return to Serie A would bring Romero back to the league where he built his reputation before his move to north London. Whether that happens this window depends on the two clubs bridging the valuation gap in the days ahead.
